TOLUCA LAKE, Calif. (KTLA) — A couple and their teenage son were terrorized by a trio of robbers at their home in Toluca Lake early Wednesday.

It happened around 2 a.m. on Toluca Estates Drive, right off Cahuenga and Lankershim.

Three male suspects entered through a second story window wearing ski masks and armed with guns.

They tied up the family with duct tape and pistol whipped a 16-year-old boy. He was taken to a local hosptial and is expected to be fine.

He has a 19-year-old brother who is away at college and was not home at the time of the robbery.

The suspects took an unknown amount of items, including some jewelry, police said.

When they fled from the home, they apparently tripped the alarm, prompting police to respond.

Investigators say it’s not clear if the home was specifically targeted. There is a golf course behind the home as well as a wash nearby.

The family didn’t get a good look at the suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call the LAPD.

Chris Dorner. A name and face we will not soon forget. From now on, every time I hear the word "Manhunt", I'll think of him...and picture that face. We have created a society in which anyone can have a soapbox. Thousands have facebooked, tweeted, re-tweeted, blogged, vlogged, face-timed, skyped, streamed, and timelined the events of the murderous madman who brutally took vengeance on members of the LAPD and their families this February. Since I've created this blog (or should I say sopabox?) I thought I'd do a post on my unusual insight and connection to this case.

Tonight at the Community Police Advisory Board meeting in North Hollywood, Captain Justin Eisenberg and officers of the North Hollywood precinct recapped the ordeal behind the scenes for us. Captain Eisenburg was directly named in Dorner's manifesto. The below are experts taken from the mentioned manifesto mentioning Eisenburg. I have copied and paste, so note the misspellings and grammatical errors are not on me :)

"What they didn’t mention was that the BOR panel made up of Capt. Phil Tingirides, Capt. Justin Eisenberg, and City Attorney Martella had a signigicant problem from the time the board was assembled."

"Capt Phil Tingirides, Justin Eisenberg, Martella, Randy Quan, and Sgt. Anderson all new I was innocent but decided to terminate me so they could continue Ofcr. Teresa Evans career."

"Bratton, Beck, Hayes, Tingirides, Eisenberg, Martella, Quan, Evans, Hernandez, Villanueva/Gallegos, and Anderson. Your lack of ethics and conspiring to wrong a just individual are over."

In a small room with 25 captive audience members, the Captain recapped some personal thoughts, facts, and emotions pre and post Chris Dorner. Here are some direct quotes from Einsenburg.

"It was an incredibly close call. God shielded us from that terrorist."

"It was the absolute worst...and the absolute best thing that's ever happened to me. I didn't lose the most important thing that's ever happened to me, my family. I didn't care about my own life. I cared about protecting them."

"I didn't know if I'd ever be able to return. It was indefinite if I would ever not be on the run from this individual. I was in NY constantly moving around with my family. The press found me, they followed me everywhere. It was horrible."

While every LAPD officer was on high alert and under a microscope from their peers, North Hollywood was placed on an extremely high alert. Many were afraid Dorner would target that precinct in his vengeance towards the Captain.  Since Captain Eisenberg was a major named target, officers were told to double up on every call and to exercise extreme caution. Officers didn't know if the next call would be their last.

Pre- Dorner
"I can't say how or why, but for a while before the [Dorner] incident, I was overly worried about how I am protecting my family. An uneasy feeling that I needed to do more. I've always been this way, but it reassured me to always trust your instinct."

Post Dorner
"I'm looking back at everything, trying to peice together signs like a puzzle."
"I left for NY because I did not want to put any officers in danger. I knew I was doing that if I stayed, being under protection. I couldn't let anyone else get hurt."

Eisenburg's Advise after this incident
Do no get complacent
Be aware of your surroundings
Criminals do not like cameras, or alarms, I recommend them
Trust your instincts
Make your house a harder target
Improve safety for your family

Something I found very interesting was a question from one of the fellow board members. They asked why the media  portrayed Dorner in almost all photographs puplished, in uniform. Some officers chimed in with "dittos" and "yeahs". Josh Rubenstein (co-chair of the board) replied. He mentioned that during this day in age, most journalists turn to facebook or twitter in a heart beat, hoping they have posted pictures to pull for their articles. No longer do we have to knock door to door to find someone who knew the perpetrator.

I had posted the following tweet during the manhunt.  ‏
@JustJessLA anyone else notice #chrisdorner started his fb page last week? 26 strange photos .facebook.com/chris.dorner.7 #manhunt

Taking a closer look, Dorner created his facebook just days before his psychotic killing spree began. The pictures he posted were of himself in uniform. Was Dorner serving up the exact imagery her knew the press would pull from? Was media manipulation behind it all? Sure seems that way.

I asked one question during the meeting. I'm still in absolute shock this is not a larger topic. As to why it is not is a whole other blog post in itself.

I asked, "Is there any current program that mandates dismissed officers receive counseling upon their exit of the force. If not, due to the nature of this incident, is the department looking to create such a program to address or possibly deter a situation like this from happening in the future?" The room erupted in, "good question". The fact this question had not come up earlier kind of bothered me a bit. In the wake of any tragedy it is often difficult to move forward. I believe our greatest weapon is using as many preventative measures as possible to combat future issues before they happen. The Captain replied with "Great question, I havent heard anyone talk about it, but you better believe I'll be bringing that up next week."

Police Officers live a different life than other citizen. Pilots, accountants, real estate agents, biologists...and most other occupations can leave their work behind when the day us done. Even stay at home entrepreneurs can turn off their thinking cap for an hour or two a day to share a meal with their families. Not police. They are of course trained to handle dangerous situations, and criminals. When their shift is over, they are encouraged to carry their weapon off duty. The thought of protecting others is all consuming no matter where you are or who you're with.  I definitely think it's worth looking into to have an "exit strategy" plan for officers that are dismissed (fired) if there isn't one already.

I want to wrap up by saying thank you to Captain Eisenburg for your bravery and dedication. Thank you to the Greater Toluca Lake Senior Lead Officer Rob Benavidez for always being available when we need you. Thank you Jay McDonald, Co-Chair of the GTLNC Public Safety Committee.  Thank you to the entire board of the Community Police Advisory Board for all of your volunteered time and commitment to keeping our community safe.

Always a friend to those who serve
Stay tuned
-- J
